The long-awaited changes to the ISO 14001 standard have arrived. This will be a great opportunity to not only update your Environmental Management System (EMS) to meet these new requirements, but also an opportunity to improve your previous processes that may have not been documented as well as possible.

Key updates in ISO 14001:2026

While the overall structure of the standard remains familiar, several important enhancements have been introduced:

  • Stronger focus on environmental context
  • Organisations are now expected to consider a wider range of environmental conditions, such as climate change impacts, biodiversity, and resource availability when determining their context.
  • Enhanced lifecycle perspective
  • There is greater emphasis on evaluating environmental impacts across the full lifecycle of products and services, from design through to end-of-life.
  • Improved risk and opportunity management
  • The updated standard provides clearer requirements for identifying and addressing environmental risks and opportunities.
  • More robust approach to change management
  • New and clarified requirements support organisations in planning and controlling changes within their environmental management systems.
  • Expanded control of externally provided processes
  • The scope of operational control has been broadened to include outsourced processes, products, and services.

These changes aim to strengthen environmental performance while maintaining a flexible framework that can be applied across organisations of all sizes and sectors.

Transition to ISO 14001:2026

Following the publication of ISO 14001:2026 on 15 April 2026, organisations currently certified to ISO 14001:2015 will be required to transition to the new version within an agreed transition period, expected to be up to three years. Early preparation will be key to ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining certification.

We will be developing training on how to implement the changes and for auditors already trained to ISO 14001:2015 how to document audits to the ISO 14001:2026 requirements. Please contact us with any questions at James.Charles@ISO14001-training.com .
